Stheno (pronounced sthē 'no)
In Greek mythology, Stheno ("forceful") was one of the three Gorgons, along with Medusa ("ruler") and Euryale ("far-roaming"). The Gorgons were monstrous feminine creatures whose appearance would turn anyone who laid eyes upon them to stone. They were covered with impenetrable scales, with hair of living snakes, hands made of brass, sharp fangs and a beard. They lived in the ultimate west, near the ocean, and guarded the entrance to the underworld. A stone head or picture of a Gorgon was often placed on the shields of soldiers or drawn on temples and graves to avert the evil spirits of misfortune.
